a mercenary communion rips discretion from hands numb with loneliness. fingers blindly devouring the bread of your body. the price of your wine a banquet of loss.
This provocative image makes brilliant use of restrained color harmonies, gesture and allegorical imagery. The final result is a piece of striking macabre beauty and emotional affect.
The primary color contrast of red and green nostalgically recalls 19th century portrait techniques. And even though the lace headdress also recalls an earlier period, the rest of her clothing, including the cross shaped "pasties" seem more modern, even a little Art Deco (see the tiny vertical pleats at the bottom of the dress). This kind of time era ambiguity gives is a kinda steampunk sensibility even without any gadgets.
The bright red of the blood vessels close to the surface of the pale skin reminds me of Sargent's "Madame X" where the rouged ear punches against the pale skin of the beauty. Here we see the same effect used in the fingertips, cheeks, elbows and eyelids. The graduated background sets the figure within three dimensional space while the light colored aura around the figure gives it punch.
The figure forms a tilted cross which is not only symbolic, but also creates two diagonal sight lines. Proportions are consistent with human anatomy, however the right breast seems less affected by gravity than it should be and shading of the right shoulder seems a little too stylized.
This is not a static figure, but rather one moved by the inner spiritual conflict. And the facial features show someone overcome by emotion but not yet certain if it be ecstasy or terror.
